Classification of Computer on the Basis of Brand and Portability

Subject: Computer and Information Technology Application

Overview

A computer is a type of electrical equipment that comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. It can be divided into various varieties based on the operating principle, size, and brand. With the development of technology and the passage of time, different computer systems fall under different categories. Computers can be categorized as IBM PC, IBM Compatible Apple/Macintosh, or desktop, laptop, or hand-held device depending on their brand and portability.

A computer is a type of electrical equipment that comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. It can be divided into various varieties based on the operating principle, size, and brand. With the development of technology and the passage of time, different computer systems fall under different categories.

On the basis of brand:

  • IBM PC
  • IBM Compatible
  • Apple/Macintosh

IBM PC

International Business Machine Personal Computer is referred to as an IBM PC. In the USA, IBM was founded in 1924, making it the largest manufacturer of computers and other electronic equipment worldwide. The IBM PC is a microcomputer made by the IBM Corporation. This company makes stable, enduring computers with greater capacity than other computers.

IBM Compatible

Many businesses produce what are known as compatibles, which are copies of IBM's personal computers. Software and devices made for the IBM PC are compatible with IBM compatible. IBM PC and IBM Compatible have comparable internal architectures. EPSON, ASER, and other brands are examples of IBM-compatible computers.

Apple/Macintosh

Another one of the biggest manufacturers of personal computers is Apple/Macintosh Company. It was founded in 1976 and was based in the United States state of California. These computers' internal architecture is entirely different from that of the IBM. They use software that is their own. This company began producing a new brand of computer in 1984 under the name Macintosh. The graphical user interface was made popular by Macintosh, which helped make it famous. MacOS is the name of the operating system created by the Apple Company for the Macintosh.

Classification of Micro Computer on the basis of portability:

  • Desktop
  • Laptop
  • Hand Held Device

Desktop:

Desktop computers are those with a large-scale assembly of the motherboard, hard drive, video card, and other components. It is one of the popular varieties of microcomputers that are offered by several businesses to all ordinary people for general purposes. The keyboard, mouse, and other devices were connected via cable or wirelessly, depending on the technology. Today's desktop computers can have LCD/LED monitors, and others still come with flat CRT monitors. The market is filled with monitors of all sizes and equipped with various extra features. This type does not employ portability-related features. Compared to other types, it is less portable.

It offers the ability to add further features because to the motherboard's extra device slots, the ease with which extra RAM and hard drives can be installed, and the simplicity with which new DVD, Network Interface Card (NIC), and Blue Ray drivers can be installed. It offers different slots for a printer, scanner, and multimedia projector. It also has variable numbers of USB ports, allowing users to easily use USB peripherals such a mouse, keyboard, and pen drives.

Because they can be utilized as servers in many businesses and industries, parent desktop PCs are far more powerful than others. Very high display quality is a good feature of desktop computers, and the CRT monitor helps to provide this feature. Many people who work in graphics and CAD (Computer Aided Design) utilize desktop computers because of this functionality. However, the main issues with desktop computers are their huge size, inability to be carried from one location to another, and higher electricity and noise consumption when compared to laptops and other portable devices.

Laptop:

The term "luggables" was given to the earliest portable computers for good cause. They weighed up to 28 pounds each. The laptop computer was soon built because to size reductions. In comparison to desktop computers, laptops are portable, consume less power, and produce less noise. Both the laptop and desktop computer perform similar tasks overall. Both share the same fundamental computer components, programs, and operating system. The size is varied because both parties' effort was largely identical.

With the invention of notebook and laptop computers, tiny computers that can fit into a briefcase of typical size, portable computing entered its golden age. These computers were initially underpowered and lacked sufficient storage. Newer models today provide the same amount of processing and storage as microcomputers and even certain workstations. Nowadays, many people own laptops. Some individuals choose laptops over desktop PCs.

But even the smallest PC is substantially bigger and heavier than a laptop. The unit's screen and keyboard, together with its many multimedia features, are essential components. Due to a laptop's intrinsic portability, its components must be flexible and fit into a small, compact space. A laptop also uses less electricity, generates less heat, and is quieter than a desktop computer.

Hand Held Device (HHD):

HHD, often referred to as Personal Digital Assistance (PDA) or Palmtops, was developed as a portable, user-friendly, and information-sharing device that may serve as an electronic organizer or day planner. Pico computers, often known as palmtop computers, are smaller but have less features. While some palmtops are general-purpose, many are personal information managers, or PIMs, with specific uses. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are specialized palmtops with built-in calculators, phone directories, and calendars (PDAs). A PDA can be used to make appointments, find frequently called numbers, and take notes. The majority of PDAs are made to take pen-written input, which the PDA then decodes.

A smart phone is a cell phone that also has PDA features or a regular PDA that has cell phone features incorporated. For smart phones, there are a variety of operating systems, including Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, iOS, MeeGo, Firefox, and others. Modern smartphones are capable of carrying out every work that a standard computer is capable of, but one of its drawbacks is the small screen size. Smart phones have several useful features, including the ability to create to-do lists, take notes, schedule reminders, track appointments, do calculations, save information anyway you like, and store contact information like name, address, phone number, and email. It uses less electricity than others and has more multimedia features.

Things to remember

A computer is an electronic device having the wide range of sizes and power. It may be classified into different types according to the principle of operation or on the size and brand. The classification of computer system varies with the advancement of technology and change of time period.
