Thrust

Subject: Midwifery III (Theory)

Overview

Thrust, also identified as candidiasis or moniliasis, is a superficial infection caused by the fungus Candida Albicans that is characterized by white patches in the mouth, tongue, and mucous membrane of the alimentary tracts made up of epithelial cells.White patches on the tongue, palate, and inner aspects of the cheeks are signs and symptoms of thrust. These patches resemble milk curd but cannot be removed when gently wiped away, and some may be removed during sucking.Treatment of the mother's vaginal thrust during the antenatal period, as well as isolation of the baby from other normal babies, are all part of the thrust management.It can be passed from person to person through improperly washed hands and contaminated utensils, so clean them thoroughly.Use a nystatin mixture or nystatin in honey to treat the condition.

Sign and symptoms

  • White patches appear on the tongue, palate, and inner cheeks.
  • The patches resemble milk curd, but they cannot be removed even with gentle wiping.
  • Some parts of the mouth may be removed while sucking. Infants may refuse to suck due to pain.

Risk factors

  • Lip and palate deformity
  • Prolonged antibiotic treatment
  • Infant with Immunological Deficiency Born to a Diabetic Mother

Management

  • During the antenatal period, treat the mother's vaginal thrust.
  • Separate the baby from other healthy babies.
  • Feeding utensils must be sterilized to the greatest extent possible.
  • It can be passed from person to person via improperly washed hands and contaminated utensils, so keep the utensils clean.
  • Clean the mouth with boiled water and a rough cloth after each feeding.
  • If the baby is bottle-fed, boil the bottle and its nipple for 20 minutes.
  • Keep your personal and environmental hygiene in check.
  • Use a nystatin mixture or nystatin in honey to treat. 10,000 units four times a day for four to seven days
  • Patches should not be removed because they may cause contamination.
  • If the baby is unable to suck well, express breast milk and give it to the baby with a spoon or dropper.

Questions and Answers

Thrust, also known as candidiasis or moniliasis, is a superficial illness brought on by the fungus Candida Albicans and is distinguished by the appearance of white patches on the tongue, mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, and mouth.

  • The tongue, palate, and inner cheek surfaces all have white patches.
  • Although they can't be eradicated with a gentle wipe, the patches resemble milk curd.
  • During sucking, some parts might be lost.
  • Infants who are in pain may not want to suckle.
  • During the prenatal period, treat the mother's vaginal thrust.
  • Separate the infant from infants of similar age.
  • Every effort must be made to disinfect the feeding equipment.
  • Unclean utensils and inadequately washed hands can spread it from one person to another, so wash them thoroughly.
  • Clean the mouth with hot water and a rough cloth after each feeding.
  • Boil the bottle and its nipple for 20 minutes if the baby is being fed by bottle.
  • Keep oneself and their environment clean.
  • Use a nystatin combination or nystatin in honey while treating. 10,000 units four times each day for four to seven days.
  • Avoid removing patches as they could become contaminated.
  • Frequent breastfeeding maintains nutrition. Use a spoon or dropper to administer breast milk if the infant is unable to adequately sucke.
