Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

Subject: Geriatric Nursing (Theory)

Overview

A benign rise in the size of the prostate is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. This is a male-only disorder in which the prostate glands swell and making urinating difficult.

Symptoms

  • Obstructive signs include hesitating voiding, decreased urinary stream force or diameter, straining to void, dribbling after voiding, and cessation of urine flow.
  • Irritating symptoms include urine frequency, nocturia, dysuria, urinary urgency, urge incontinence, and suprapubic discomfort.

Treatment

The basic method of treatment is to utilize medicines to relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder, allowing urine to flow more freely. There are now two medication classes available: alpha adrenergic blockers (terazosin or Doxazosin) and 5alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride)

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate is a surgical treatment for BPH (TURP)
