Glaucoma

Subject: Geriatric Nursing (Theory)

Overview

It is a collection of diseases that cause optic nerve injury in the eye, resulting in vision loss and blindness. Several big investigations have found that high eye pressure is a significant risk factor for optic nerve injury. When an eye's drainage system fails, aqueous fluid is unable to filter out of the eye at its typical rate, and pressure rises within the eye, potentially causing optic nerve damage and consequent vision loss.

Causes

  • Family history
  • Ageing
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Eye trauma
  • Nearsightedness

Symptoms

  • Loss of sight
  • Blurred vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Difficulty focusing and loss of peripheral vision.

Treatment

Medical, laser, and surgical treatments are available. Initially, medical therapy is most typically provided with the purpose of lowering IOP. To enhance aqueous flow and hence lower IOP, laser trabeculoplasty or surgical trabeculectomy can be performed.
