Daily Requirement of Water for a Person

Water is used from birth till death, however the quantity & quality requirements vary. The amount of water consumed is influenced by meteorological factors, living standards, and cultural practices. About 2 liters of water per person per day is the minimal physiological need for drinking water. Simply for survival, this is. Water should, however, be made available in sufficient quantities in order to promote public health and quality of life. It aids in lowering water-related illness among those who are most vulnerable. 150–200 liters per lead per day, 45–50 gallons per head per day for hospitals, and 20–25 gallons per head per day for domestic use in urban areas are considered adequate allowances.

Personal & environmental hygiene depend on adequate volume of water supply. WHO has set the following targets for development counties with regard to water supply:

  • Every building in a community has to have access to piped water.
  • At all times, water pressure should be maintained.
  • Water needs to be supplied in sufficient quantity for all applications.
  • It is important to set and enforce drinking water quality standards.
  • Water sources need to be shielded from contamination.
  • Water projects should be run independently, according to sound management principles.
  • It is important to set aside enough money for operations, maintenance, and depreciation.
  • Water supply quality needs to be monitored.
