Musculoskeletal Disorder

Subject: Medical and Surgical Nursing I (Theory)

Overview

Injuries or discomfort in the body's joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and structures that support the limbs, neck, and back are referred to as musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs). MSDs can result from sudden exertion (like lifting a heavy object), repetitive strain from doing the same motions over and over, or exposure to force, vibration, or bad posture repeatedly. Examples of MSDs include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendinitis, back pain, tension neck syndrome, etc. The symptoms of MSDs include osteoarthritis, back pain, rheumatic arthritis, etc.It may be diagnosed via radiography, imaging, and other techniques like x-rays. He or she could be requested to wait after the exam is finished until the radiologist decides that all the required pictures have been obtained. Benefits of x-rays include their speed and ease of use, their use in emergency diagnosis and treatment, the fact that no radiation is left in the body of the patient after an x-ray examination, etc. Women should always disclose to their doctor or x-ray technician if they think they could be pregnant. For more information regarding x-rays and pregnancy, visit the Safety page.

Musculoskeletal Disorder

Injuries or discomfort in the body's joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and structures that support the neck and back are referred to as musculoskeletal diseases. It can result from acute exertion (such lifting a large object), repetitive strain from doing the same actions over and over, or exposure to force, vibration, or uncomfortable posture repeatedly. Acute traumatic events like a car accident or a fall can cause injuries and pain in the musculoskeletal system, but these are not regarded as musculoskeletal disorders. It may have an impact on the upper and lower back, neck, shoulders, and extremities, among other body parts.

An example of MSDs includes:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome,
  • Epicondylitis,
  • Tendinitis,
  • Back pain,
  • Tension neck syndrome,
  • Hand-arm vibration syndrome.

Common Musculoskeletal Conditions

Back pain and problems are caused by numerous factors including muscle strain or displacement of an intervertebral disc. These may result from an underlying illness or injury.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition affecting weight-bearing joints such as the hips, knees and ankles as well as the hands and spine. In the initial stages, pain occurs in the joints during and after activity, but as the condition progresses pain may be experienced from minimal movement or during rest.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease causing chronic inflammation of the joints. It most commonly affects the hand joints and can lead to deformities of the hands.

Osteoporosis is a condition where there is a progressive loss of bone density and decreases in the strength of the skeleton with a resultant risk of fracture.

Juvenile arthritis refers to the types of arthritis occurring in children under 16 years of age. It may cause significant pain, disability and restrictions in school and other activities.

Things to remember
  • Injuries or discomfort in the body's joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and structures that support the limbs, neck, and back are referred to as musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs).
  • Syndrome of hand-arm vibration
  • An auto-immune condition known as rheumatoid arthritis causes persistent joint inflammation.
  • Types of arthritis that affect children under the age of 16 are referred to as juvenile arthritis.
  • Any bone in the body, including those in the hand, wrist, arm, elbow, shoulder, foot, ankle, leg, knee, thigh, hip, pelvis, and spine, can be seen with an X-ray.
  • The risk of developing cancer from excessive radiation exposure is always small.
  • Women should always disclose to their doctor or x-ray technician if they think they might be pregnant.
  • After a fracture has been treated, show that the bony fragments are properly aligned and stabilized.
Questions and Answers

Injuries or discomfort in the body's joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and structures that support the limbs, neck, and back are referred to as musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs). MSDs can result from abrupt exertion (such lifting a large object), repetitive strain from doing the same motions over and over, or exposure to force, vibration, or bad posture repeatedly. Musculoskeletal disorders do not include injuries and discomfort in the musculoskeletal system brought on by sudden trauma, such as a vehicle accident or fall. MSDs can have an impact on the upper and lower back, neck, shoulders, and limbs, among other body areas (arms, legs, feet, and hands).

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that affects the hands, spine, and weight-bearing joints like the hips, knees, and ankles. Joint pain initially manifests during and after activity, but as the condition worsens, pain may also be felt during rest or with minimal movement.
