Hepatitis C

Subject: Medical and Surgical Nursing I (Theory)

Overview

Hepatitis C

The hepatitis C virus causes this liver illness.

Signs and symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Jaundice

Diagnosis

Only 20% of people who are infected with HCV will be able to remove the virus on their own. The remainder will be contaminated for the rest of their lives and may unwittingly infect others.

A simple blood test termed an HCV antibody (or anti-HCV) screen can be used to check for HCV.

An FDA-approved fast test with findings in 20 minutes is available. Otherwise, blood is obtained by venipuncture and processed in a laboratory. A negative test results in no hepatitis exposure or infection. A positive test indicates exposure but not HCV infection.

Care patient with hepatitis c

  • Patients with advanced fibrosis, compensated cirrhosis, liver transplant recipients, and severe extrahepatic fibrosis should seek advice.
  • Although surgery will not cure hepatitis C, some people will require a liver transplant in the future.
  • Rest in bed
  • Abstinence from drinking
  • Medication to alleviate symptoms.
  • Transplantation of the liver
  • Provide a nutritious and well-balanced diet.
  • Regular exercise.
