Overview

Filariasis is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease caused by the filarial parasites w. bancrofti and B. malayi. It is spread by the bite of a culex mosquito.

Details about Filariasis:

Mode of transmission: From infected mosquito bites. 

Incubation period is about 12 to18 months.

It possesses the following clinical features:

  • Feverish attack
  • Lymphangitis
  • Lymphedema of various bodily parts 
  • Lymphadenitis
  • Elephantaiasis of the vaginal region, legs, and arms
  • Hydrocele
  • Chyluria

This condition can be diagnosed in the following ways:

  • Examining Night blood sears under the microscope.

How can this disease be managed?

It can be managed through:

  • Medical management
  • Chemotherapy- diethylcarbamanzine

Nursing management

  • Explain the significance of mosquito control.
  • The significance of insect repellents
  • Mosquito net applications
  • Filariasis is a disease that man created. It is linked to inadequate drainage and environmental sanitation. As a result, health education for the general people is critical.
  • To reduce mosquito breeding, remove the pista plant.
  • Organophosphours, maosquito larval oil, pynosens oil
  • Mosquito control
  • Elimination of mosquito breeding areas such as open drains, cesspools, and other pools of stagnant water. These areas are sprayed with chemicals to reduce culex insects.
