Overview

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease that can range from mild to severe illness. Hepatitis A is spread by the consumption of contaminated food and drink, as well as through direct contact with an affected individual.

Cause of Hepatitis A

  • Contaminated food or water, among other things

 

Symptoms:

  1. Jaundice (yellow eyes and skin, black urine) 
  2. You are experiencing abdominal pain.
  3. Appetite loss
  4. Nausea
  5. Fever
  6. Diarrhea
  7. Fatigue
  8. Dehydration is severe.

Nursing management

  • During the earliest stages of the infection, get lots of rest.
  • If you experience aches and pains, take pain relievers such paracetamol or ibuprofen.
  • Maintain a cool, well-ventilated atmosphere to reduce itching.
  • Eat smaller and lighter meals.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol.
  • Stay away from work or school for at least a week after experiencing jaundice or other symptoms.
  • Hands should be washed with soap and water on a frequent basis.
  • More regularly than normal, clean the toilet, flush knobs, and faucets.
  • Avoid having sex when you are contagious.

Risks to be avoided:

  • Live with or have sex with an infected person
  • Travel to hepatitis A-endemic countries

People who are also at risk are:

  • Males who have sexual relations with other men
  • Individuals who inject illicit substances
  • Children in day care and their caretakers
