Overview

It is the misalignment of the axis of the eyes. When looking at an object the axes are parallel in normal individuals. The axes are not parallel. The main cause of strabismus is bacterial infection due to staphylococcus, streptococcus, pneumococcus, viral infection, chlamydial infection, Fungus candida Albicans, nd allergens.Clinical features are watery eyes, photophobia, chemosis & swelling of eyelids, redness of eye & eye discomfort. Its treatment includes eye protection by use of sunglasses, antibiotic in a case of bacterial conjunctivitis- Tetracycline, chloramphenicol and cleaning the eye, strict personal hygiene & sanitation.

Treatment Process of Strabismus; 4 ‘0” S

  • Optical corrections of retroactive error with glasses.
  • Orthoptic exercise
  • Occlusion for amblyopic
  • Operation – to strengthen the weak muscles & awaken the strong.
  • Conjunctivitis

Causes of Strabismus

It is the inflammation of the conjunctiva. The following are some of the basic causes;

  • Bacterial –staphylococcus, streptococcus, pneumococcus
  • Virus- adenovirus. Herpes simplex
  • Chlamydial infection
  • Fungus candida Albicans
  • Allergens – pollens dust

Clinical features of strabismus

  • Watering
  • Photophobia
  • Chemosis & swelling of eyelids
  • Redness of eye & eye discomfort
  • Copious or purulent discharge
  • Conjunctival congestion

Treatment process of strabismus

  • Eye protection by use of sunglasses.
  • Eye washing 3-5 times a day
  • Warm compression
  • Clean the eye, strict personal hygiene & sanitation
  • Antibiotic in a case of bacterial conjunctivitis- Tetracycline, chloramphenicol.
  • No use of systemic antibiotics

  • systemic antibiotics are not used.
