Overview

Evaluation is much more than a technique. It is a method an educator can use, to determine whether a student is achieving the goals of the learning experiences.It is a continual process and means careful study of what is being done. Types of evaluation are formative or diagnostic evaluation and certifying evaluation or summative evaluation.The purpose of evaluation are to determine the progress a student is making toward achieving the goals of the programme, to help the individual student maintain strength and eliminate weakness, to help the teacher improve his/her teaching and to determine the authenticity and fertility of the programme in general.

Evaluation is more than just a method. It's a strategy teachers can use to check in on their students' progress toward mastering course material.

This is an ongoing process that requires close observation of current practices.

Types of evaluation:

 Diagnostic or a formative assessment

  • Aims to make the student aware of how much work lies ahead of him before he may reach his educational goals.
  • Students' participation in the activities can be modified in response to their level of mastery or lack thereof.
  • Helps direct the student in the right direction and encourages them to seek clarification when they get stuck.
  • Allows for curricular changes to be made in light of student progress or lack thereof.

Summative or final assessment for certification purposes

Its purpose is to safeguard society by limiting the access of incompetent workers to the labor force.
serves as the standard method for evaluating students and deciding whether or not to promote them to the next level of study or grant them a certificate or degree based on their performance.
conducts assessments less frequently than formative evaluation, typically at the end of a unit or period of education.
