DHIS (District Health Information System)

South Africa's healthcare system is notoriously unequal since it was left to the country's new democratic government after apartheid ended in 1994. The health care system needed to be rebuilt, therefore the new democratic administration set about doing just that. Thus, in 1995, a proposal was made to launch a pilot program to create a district-wide health and management information system.

DHIS was originally based on the Microsoft Office Access platform. As a standalone database management system, it was deemed beneficial. Several nations have employed DHIS to gather and analyze data on a monthly basis, at the municipal, regional, and provincial levels. In these instances, the DHIS was installed locally on a variety of computers around the country, each with its own local copy of the data.
