Overview

Koran International Cooperation Agency

In order to implement the government's grant aid and technical cooperation programs, the KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) Nepal Office was established as a government organization in 1995. This was done to increase the effectiveness of Korea's grant aid programs for developing countries.

As a bilateral aid organization, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has been carrying out initiatives for development cooperation on behalf of the South Korean government in Nepal. KOICA is putting numerous projects, volunteer dispatch, and fellowship programs into action.

Objectives of KOICA

  • Through promoting world peace and assisting its partner nations' sustainable socio-economic development, to assist in tackling concerns of global development.

Activities of KOICA →

  •  The project for the Integrated Rural Development of Nepal through Strengthening Research and Development Capacity of Kathmandu University has been granted US$ 10 million, or approximately NRS 1.02 billion, in grant assistance by the Government of Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The goals of this project are to strengthen Kathmandu University's capacity for research and development while also encouraging technological innovation to raise the standard of living and income status of those living in rural areas of Nepal. The project is being carried out by KOICA, Nepal, and Kathmandu University. The project will run from 2018 until 2023 A.D.
  • KOICA Project: Providing Comprehensive Sexuality Education and a Safe Learning Environment to Empower Adolescent Girls and Young Women. In Nepal, the project will be carried out in five districts.
  • The Nepal Government and concerned Municipality assigned these hospitals to handle the COVID-19 response, so the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) donated six different types of medical supplies to help the four hospitals (Trishuli Hospital, Nuwakot, Nepal Korea Friendship Municipality Hospital (NKFMH), Bhaktapur, Tikapur Hospital, Kailali, and Dhulikhel Hospital, Kavre) improve their ability to handle the COVID-19.
  • Through these logistical supports, KOICA seeks to increase the capacity of health professionals to deliver services in a more secure setting.
  • The COVID-19 awareness campaign was also launched by KOICA through the creation of a social distancing YouTube video clip. Additionally, the vice chancellor of Kathmandu University was invited to participate in the Stay Strong online relay campaigns and receive support for medical equipment.
  • The government of Nepal recently declared Dhulikhel, Tikapur, and Trishuli Hospital as official COVID-19 response facilities. KOICA has been assisting Nepal's health sector, including the development of these three hospitals. By donating a freshly constructed hospital building for the creation of isolation rooms, KOICA assisted Trishuli hospital. Additionally, this hospital now has an oxygen plant thanks to KOICA.
  • One of the first 50-bed hospitals built by KOICA and given to the government of Nepal in 2009, the Nepal Korea Friendship Municipality Hospital is part of the Madhyapur Thimi Municipality.
