Overview

NSI is a non-profit that was officially recognized by the Nepalese government in 2006. This organization coordinates training and assistance initiatives with ten hospitals and clinics in different parts of Nepal. Many of Kathmandu's largest hospitals (including mission, NGO, and government facilities) collaborate with NSI to offer their staff training opportunities. NSI's Rural Staff Support Program (RSSP) provides funding for 18 government district hospitals in the districts of Bajhang, Dolakha, Gulmi, Kapilvastu, Salyan, Kalikot, Doti, Bardiya, Pyuthan, Myagdi, Mahottari, Taplejung, Khotang, Argakhachi, Bajura, All of them were neglected communities with hospitals that were badly run before RSSP was implemented. The Nick Simons Institute works to change perceptions and policies that affect the rural healthcare worker.

The Nick Simons Institute is a non-profit organization in Nepal whose goal is to promote the widespread implementation of novel approaches to rural health care by providing training and assistance to hospitals. It's a nonprofit group with the goal of improving health services in Nepal's rural areas by training more competent medical professionals to serve the population there. NSI is a nonprofit that was officially recognized by the Nepalese government in 2006. Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur is home to its headquarters. This organization coordinates training and assistance initiatives with ten hospitals and clinics in different parts of Nepal. All money comes from the Nick Simons Foundations (NY).

Vision

  • People in rural areas will receive a full range of quality healthcare services in their own communities

Mission

  • The goal of this project is to prepare and sustain rural Nepal's qualified and caring healthcare personnel.

Objectives

  • Providing long-lasting, quality training for a wide spectrum of rural health care professionals.
  • Building a framework to assist with human resources at government-run hospitals in outlying areas.
  • The goal is to shift public perception and legislation to better assist those who work in rural health care.
  • In order to evaluate its services and study the health care providers in rural locations.

Strategic Principles

A Board and an inclusive Technical Advisory Board oversee its operations, Its strategic principles are:

  • Collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) to achieve national goals.
  • Collaborate with institutions that deliver top-notch care.
  • Gather up teams of people who will most likely be serving in remote regions and prepare them for that assignment.
  • Support field workers and advocates beyond just training.

Major Programs

  1. Training services: 
    Many of Kathmandu's largest hospitals (including mission, NGO, and government facilities) collaborate with NSI to offer their staff training opportunities. especially those situated beyond Programs including those for Anesthesia Assistants, Biomedical Equipment Technicians, Developing Professionals at the Mid-Level, Operation Room Technicians, and Skilled Birth Attendants.
     
  2.  District Hospital Support Program

District Hospital Support Program was developed in 2014 when NSI's Rural Staff Support Program (RSSP) and Hospital ng Management Strengthening Program (HMSP) amalgamated (DHS). DHS seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of curative care at Nepal's public district hospitals.
  • Develop replicable methods for the deployment of human resources and hospital management that the Nepalese Ministry of Health may use to expand its services.

Hospital Management Strengthening Program(HMSP)

To better understand the demand for hospital management education, NSI and the National Health Training Centre performed a literature review and an electronic requirements assessment in 2011. (NHTC). Improvements in patient care were visible at all four participating hospitals (Jiri, Ramechhap, Bardiya, and Pyuthan). The MSS workshop, hospital grant, and hospital follow-up programs are all put into action.

Rural Staff Support Program (RSSP)

The Rural Staff Support Program (RSSP) improves the quality of care in government district hospitals in Nepal, allowing them to expand their scope of practice to include surgical procedures. RSSP was established in 2007 by the Nepalese Ministry of Health and the Nick Simons Institute, and since then it has expanded to provide funding for 18 government district hospitals in the districts of Bajhang, Dolakha, Gulmi, Kapilvastu, Salyan, Kalikot, Doti, Bardiya, Pyuthan, Myagdi, Mahottari, Darchula, Taplejung, Khotang, Argakhachi, Bajura, All of them were neglected communities with hospitals that were badly run before RSSP was implemented. The RSSP's primary areas of interest are in health care, namely human resources, the welfare of healthcare workers, and their professional development.

Advocacy

The Nick Simons Institute works to change perceptions and policies that affect the rural healthcare worker. Advocacy and NSI's other programs complement each other.

Conferences

  • The National Healthcare Conference is an annual event hosted by NSI in conjunction with the Department of Health Services (DoHS) and the National Health Training Center (NHTC).
  • More than 50 districts from all throughout the country sent doctors, nurses, paramedics, and administrators to the meeting. There is a three-day gathering with the following goals in mind:
  • Creation of a network of healthcare workers, who share common challenges and joys
  • Continuing medical education
  • Forum for exchange between government and rural workers

Nick Simon Award

  • NSI and the Nepali government's National Health Training Center (NHTC) work together annually to choose and honor a deserving healthcare provider working in a remote area of the country.

Newsletter

  • Twice a year, NSI publishes a newsletter that is sent out to over 6,000 people working in health care in all 75 of Nepal's districts.
